CBD For Pets - Safe and Effective?

CBD products of all kinds are everywhere right now, so it only makes sense that companies are selling products for pets. But are these products safe for your furry friend? Read on for everything you need to know about CBD for pets.

With CBD consumption being so widespread, it can be difficult to determine what is factual, science-based information and what is an exaggeration. And this fact is especially true when we’re talking about information on pet CBD products you purchase online.

Additionally, companies have a financial interest to make cannabis-derived products like CBD the most appealing to customers - whether those customers intend to ingest themselves or give it to their fur babies. Although there might be CBD products companies sell to pets other than dogs or cats, they are the most common and most popular. As such, we will be focusing on whether CBD products are safe for your dogs and cats.

CBD for Pets: Is It Safe?

Cannabis has no known toxicity level, and likely won’t cause death in your dog or cat. However, it is well-known that the cannabinoid THC affects canines up to six times harder than it does humans. For this reason, you will want to steer clear of giving your fur baby any product that contains THC. If your dog or cat ingests an edible, you should likely get them to a vet immediately.

With that in mind, most CBD-only products are derived exclusively from the hemp plant. As per the Farm Bill passed in 2018, hemp was legalized in all 50 U.S. states, provided it contains less than 0.03% THC. Even though that low level of THC likely won’t harm your dog or cat, it is best to find products that contain zero trace amounts of the cannabinoid to be perfectly sure.

Whether you are buying for yourself or your dog or cat, make sure that you only purchase high-quality products that meet the standards of acceptable CBD levels. Always purchase CBD products from companies that uphold proper safety and lab-testing standards, and publish their results online.

CBD for Pets: Is It Effective?

As is the case with far too many things cannabis-related, there is still much more scientific research necessary to determine whether CBD is effective for your pets. However, animal advocacy groups like the Anti-Cruelty Society have given CBD products - most commonly CBD oil to dogs.

CBD oil was mainly given to dogs to help with their anxiety and was closely monitored by Society veterinarians. This could prove helpful for pets who experience separation anxiety when their guardians leave home, possibly reducing and eventually eliminating any accidents or damage to household items caused by such separation anxiety.

Many of these vets have a positive outlook on the possibility of CBD to help dogs and cats live healthier lives. CBD has been well-documented to act as an anti-inflammatory, and therefore could potentially help your dog or cat if they suffer from joint pain, swelling, and so on.

Trust the Experts

This should go without saying, but discuss CBD with your vet before giving anything to your pets. Your vet will know your dog or cat’s individual health history - likely better than you. A vet can recommend to you some of the best CBD products that will help your pet live a happier and healthier life.
